80 white cups placed against a white background

2024

the project "80 white cups against a white background" is a zine (layout and photography by ika sakharova) that explores what happens when a simple design object, such as a cup, is recontextualized as an art object.

in this project, 80 pieces of clay became white coffee cups, produced at agami ceramics in the "electrozavod" factory in moscow, russia. this is the first collaboration between agami ceramics and the artist since 2017, where the cups were made in plain white. for the zine's photoshoot, the cups were photographed and displayed against a white wall, revealing an invisible conflict that the artist continues to explore in her practice.

from this presentation, the new journey of the 80 white cups begins.

whose hands will they end up in? will they enhance someone's daily life and presence? or will they be broken and continue their existence as shards in the ground? will they remain white? will the wall against which they stand remain white?

by observing the lives of these 80 cups and contemplating the changes that may or may not occur, this project invites viewers to see a familiar object through the artist's eyes.

the presentation took place at the tzvetnik contemporary art school and was conducted by ika sakharova and nikita sinyavkiy according to the artist's script.
